Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens
The Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens consists of a fourteen acre museum that is situated inside the River Oaks Community within Houston. It contains a collection featuring furniture, decorative art and paintings. Visitors can also see the lovely garden which contains a diverse collection worth of fauna and flora. In 1979 it became featured on the National Register of Historic Places.
Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary
This stunning natural sanctuary features a log cabin that has been restored and used for educational programs. It also contains the Houston Audubon Society administrative offices. Visitors will get to view the plant nursery where they will see grasses and wildflowers from the coast prairie restoration program and the sanctuary also has some fauna, flora and other wildlife.
Children’s Museum of Houston
This museum for children covers more than ninety thousand square feet and showcases interactive exhibits. Its purpose is to transform the community through innovative learning which is child centric where they will be encouraged to follow their passions and interests.
Downtown Aquarium
This popular aquarium covers six acres and functions as a dining and entertainment complex which holds about five hundred thousand gallons of water that contains more than three hundred species worth of aquatic life. It contains a restaurant where visitors can eat, along with geographic and aquatic exhibits as well as a ballroom.
Eldridge/George Bush Park
This park is named after President George H.W. Bush, and is situated within a big flood controlled structure named Barker. The grounds are about 7800 acres in size while much of its surrounding area is undeveloped and used for storing floodwater. However, it does feature baseball and soccer field complexes as well as a dog park and even shooting range.
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
This nature center and arboretum can be found near Memorial Park in 4501 Woodway Drive. It consists of 5 miles worth of natural trails, as well as a wetland, forest, meadow and pond habitats. There are also specialty gardens like Wildlife Garden, Sensory Garden and Hummingbird & Butterfly Island.
Discovery Green
This park is open to the public and is located in central Houston. It contains bandstands, public performance venues, a playground and 2 dog runs. There are also numerous recreational lawns and because of its strategic location it receives a large number of visitors on a daily basis.
1940 Air Terminal Museum
This museum uses an art deco style and was the first facility built for Houston passenger flights. Today it features a number of collections which showcase the city’s aviation history. The Houston Aeronautical Society operates it.
Blaffer Art Museum
This museum showcases contemporary art and can be found near the University of Houston. It showcases national as well as international artists along with works from the students in different styles and formats.
