Austin is a wonderful place to retire. You’ll find plenty of activities and entertainment, but it’s also a city with plenty of history. It’s a great place to live and has plenty of things for you to enjoy when you move into senior apartments in Austin, TX. Here are some of my favorite places in Austin where you can enjoy the past while still enjoying active retirement:
The LBJ Presidential Library
The LBJ Presidential Library is a great place to visit for history buffs. The library was established in 1971, and it pays tribute to former President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ). It’s located on the University of Texas at Austin campus and includes archives that document his political career and personal life.
The most famous part of the library is known as “The Birthplace,” which houses some of LBJ’s belongings, such as clothing he wore during his presidential term and even items from his childhood home, including old toys that belonged to him when he was just a boy! You’ll also find exhibits dedicated to other presidents who lived in Texas before moving to Washington D.C., such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S Grant.
Austin Nature And Science Center
Located 4 miles from downtown Austin, the Austin Nature and Science Center offers a variety of educational programs and activities for children and families. The center is open seven days a week, with hours varying by season. Certain events have an admission fee.
The center hosts “Pond Days” on Saturdays during spring and fall; learn about different kinds of frogs and turtles! Or check out the center’s monthly stargazing program, “Light at Night.” They also offer classes such as “How to Choose a Reptile,” or enjoy their butterfly garden. The center also has indoor classrooms to avoid the heat outside!
Austin Zoo And Animal Sanctuary
Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit zoo that offers visitors a chance to see everything from monkeys, elephants, lions, tigers, and bears to reptiles. The zoo is open every day of the year and offers special activities for children on certain days of the week.
The zoo also has a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, and other small mammals you might find in your home or neighborhood, such as rabbits. If you want to learn more about these animals, then this is the place to do it!
The Texas Capitol Building
The Texas state capitol building is one of the most iconic buildings in Austin and is a must-see destination for any tourist visiting the city. The building is open to visitors, allowing them to walk right up to and explore it.
While there are plenty of things to see inside this historic site—including an impressive dome that reaches 260 feet high—you can also take advantage of some great views from outside! From its location on Congress Avenue, take a moment to admire how this structure stands out amongst other high-rise buildings in downtown Austin and look down upon some smaller structures nearby.
