The holidays mean different things for different people. Some individuals will observe Hanukkah, while others celebrate Kwanzaa. Still others will observe Christmas and all that goes with it.
By now, most 55+ apartments in Plano, TX are well into their holiday celebrations. Trees have been decorated, lights strung, cute characters in the windows… There is no limit to the decorating one can do when it comes to Christmas. But in addition to decorating, what are today’s retirement communities doing to celebrate Christmas?
Here some suggestions, in case you’re looking for ideas.
Therapy through Dance
Dancing is one of the most beneficial activities you can participate in. You can have fun and still get quite a workout, provided you do the right dance. If you can’t dance, don’t want to dance, or don’t feel physically up to it, you can “chair dance” all you want while the Christmas music plays. Time for rockin’ around the Christmas tree!
Trivia
How much do you know about Christmas? Test your knowledge with a game of Christmas trivia. This can cover everything from Christmas movies to the names of Santa’s reindeer to Christmas cartoon characters, and more.
Movie Night
How many Christmas movies do you suppose there are? Too many to count, in all likelihood. So, it won’t be a problem to have at least one or more Christmas movie nights per week. You may even run one every night from now through that special holiday.
Christmas Bingo
Bingo is, of course, only one game that can be tied to Christmas. Rather than calling out numbers, for instance, each square on your bingo card can have the name of a well-known Christmas carol. Someone plays the Christmas carol over a loudspeaker, and if your card has the name of the carol on it, you put a marker in that square. You can also play this game with other Christmas related topics.
Recipe Sharing
Whether it’s Christmas cookies, cake, cupcakes, pie, homemade bread – what have you – Christmas recipes can be shared by residents of your community. Though eating the chef-prepared meals provided in a retirement community is glorious, it’s nice to have homemade goodies for the holidays.
Arts and Crafts
There are seemingly unlimited Christmas related arts and crafts project all over the Internet. Pick a few and have one per week until Christmas day. The community can either provide the materials needed, or residents can bring things from home and improvise.
Tree Decorating
If your Christmas tree isn’t already up and decorated, it’s high time! Residents can either make decorations for the tree, or simply hang decorations that are already stocked by the retirement community itself. Make an event of your tree decorating session.
Secret Santa
While many today may be living on a limited income, a Secret Santa can still be participated in, for the most part. Make the spending limit as high or low as you wish – depending on the income/savings of those participating. Make the gifts fun, meaningful, unique – it’s up to you.
Join in the Fun!
There may be numerous celebrations, activities, and/or events at your retirement community that will observe one or more holidays. Make time to attend at least one celebration. Even if you don’t cut a rug at the dance, at least you can socialize with others in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Help make the holidays truly special by sharing them with someone you love (or even just like).
