Wellderly Day: A Celebration of Vibrant Living
Wellderly Day was established in 2016 by the nonprofit organization Wellderly to celebrate vibrant living at any age. The founders of Wellderly, a group of scientists and entrepreneurs, recognized that many people were living energetic, purposeful and healthy lives well into their 80s, 90s and beyond. To shift the overpowering, negative stereotypes of aging, they coined the term “wellderly” to refer to “elders” who exhibit exceptional physical and cognitive health.
In selecting March 18th as Wellderly Day, the founders sought to coincide with the vernal equinox and the beginning of spring. Just as nature experiences renewal in springtime, they envisioned the wellderly as blossoming with vitality. The recurrent theme of regeneration reinforces the concept that we all have an opportunity to continually refresh ourselves by adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
To inaugurate the first annual Wellderly Day in 2016, Wellderly launched an online campaign to share inspiring stories of people thriving in their later years. They also partnered with senior centers, retirement communities and aging-focused nonprofits to host festive celebrations to recognize the wellderly. Today, Wellderly Day events now take place worldwide in more than a dozen countries. This global recognition reflects a cultural shift towards recognizing the possibilities for healthy longevity across the entire lifespan.
