If you’re considering making the move to a retirement community, know this: Today’s independent living retirement communities are not your great-grandmother’s “nursing home”! Take all the misconceptions and urban legends you may be familiar with and toss them out the window. Today’s all-inclusive independent living communities are resort-like in nature, offering more amenities than you may realize. Residents in these communities want for absolutely nothing.
Particularly for those who qualify for an independent living lifestyle, a retirement community is a stellar opportunity for maximum wellness, health, and happiness in their golden years. There are health and wellness programs in which to participate, game nights, regularly scheduled events and activities, arts and crafts classes, and much more. Some communities have lush, manicured greenery through which you can stroll each and every day, outdoor pools, exercise rooms, etc.
Stay as active as you like or relax in peace and quiet – it’s all up to you.
Exercise Classes and More
Whether it’s yoga, a sit-and-be-fit program, power walks, or some other type of exercise/fitness program, it’s very likely offered in the retirement community you are considering. Take a tour of the community before you make any decisions, however, and ask the care team what’s offered.
If the activity you’re looking for doesn’t take place within the community, many of them offer complimentary transportation. If there is a class or event in town you’d like to attend, they’ll be happy to take you there and bring you back.
Clubs and Groups
Many of today’s retirement communities have clubs and/or groups of residents with some type of interest in common. Travel groups, book clubs, arts and crafts clubs, and birdwatching groups are just a few examples. Have your meetings at the retirement community or in town, a park, or whatever location suits you best. Remember, complimentary transportation is likely available, so inquire about it when you take your tour.
Concerts and Dancing
If dancing and music give you more of a workout than calisthenics or yoga, dance and move to your heart’s content during a concert, scheduled dance, in-town festival, or some other music venue. During your tour of the community, look for a monthly activities and events calendar. See how many dances and other activities are scheduled for the month that revolves around music.
The thing to keep in mind is your life will be as active or relaxing as you want it to be. Your time is finally your own. You’re retired! In fact, today’s retirement communities even have maintenance teams to do all the apartment upkeep for you, and housekeeping teams available so you don’t have to spend any time cleaning.
